Wildlife Overview

Great wildlife viewing is probably Africa's main visitor attraction and Botswana is an outstanding place in which to experience some of the best there is to see. Many of us have heard of the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert - two very different but fascinating eco-systems. Limpopo-Lipadi brings together the best of many worlds with its diverse ecology of dense bush, forested areas, 21km of river front, rocky hills and koppies, its open plains and more. This diversity accounts for the abundance and variety of fauna and flora found on Limpopo-Lipadi Game and Wilderness Reserve.

Major Predators

Watching big cats is high on many people's list of game experiences and Limpopo-Lipadi has much to offer. Over the last couple of years sightings of cheetah have been on the rise with a coalition of three males regularly being sighted on the north side of the reserve. As their size allows them to come and go using warthog burrows that appear under the fence our population is in constant flux, but the spoor of up to eight individuals have been identified. Full details of species can be found here.

Limpopo-Lipadi is a fantastic place for bird watching with nearly 400 species calling the reserve home, especially in the summer months. Dozens of different raptors ride the thermals whilst the bush provides a home to a myriad of species, varying from brilliantly coloured sunbirds and bee-eaters to the stately secretary bird. The life-giving Limpopo River attracts many water birds too. A full list of all species expected on the reserve can be found here.

Large Herbivores

Limpopo-Lipadi supports a wealth of antelopes and other herbivores all the way from the tiny steenbok all the way up to giant elephant bulls. The variety of species is only possible because of our diverse range of habitats, with plains providing sanctuary for zebra, thick bush for herds of impala, as well as rock koppies for klipspringer. Full details of the whole range of species can be found in our animal species list.
